Serco, a British provider of critical defense and government services, announced on Wednesday that it has secured a five-year UK Ministry of Defense contract to operate and maintain the Upgraded Early Warning Radar at RAF Fylingdales, supporting missile detection and tracking, as well as monitoring objects in Low Earth Orbit.
According to Serco’s press release, the company provides uninterrupted 24/7, 365 days a year support at RAF Fylingdales in North Yorkshire to deliver optimal radar performance. Serco is also responsible for the radar’s hardware and systems operation and maintenance, as well as providing analytical and training activities.
The contract begins in April 2027 and includes an option for an additional two-year extension.
As part of the contract, a new software analytical tool — the Enhanced Spacetrack Processor (ESP) — will be used to analyze large amounts of track data to determine the position, orbit, and size of objects in Low Earth Orbit. The ESP is developed with the RAF and UK Space Command to replace the UK Spacetrack Processor (UKSP), which has been used for more than three decades.
