Saab delivers Giraffe 1X radars to UK for counter-drone missions

Defense company Saab UK announced on Wednesday that it has delivered Giraffe 1X radar systems to the Royal Air Force (RAF).

The procurement follows extensive collaboration between Saab and the British air force. The spokesperson from the RAF highlighted that the equipment is “critical in mitigating the risk to life posed by the drone threat.”

“We are proud to provide British and coalition forces with the capabilities they need to carry out their mission and to keep people and society safe,” said Andy Fraser, Group Managing Director at Saab UK.

The Giraffe 1X radar systems have been integrated into the RAF’s wider counter-drone architecture, supporting the detection, tracking, and engagement of airborne threats. The capability complements the RAF Regiment’s ongoing role in providing counter-UAS protection for UK and coalition forces, including operations in the Middle East, where specialist teams continue to protect personnel and facilities from drone threats.

Saab UK received an order from the UK Ministry of Defense for the Giraffe 1X radar system in April 2026. Developed in both the UK and Sweden, where Saab’s headquarters are located, the technology is designed for air surveillance, weapon locating, and counter-uncrewed aerial system (C-UAS) operations.

Last month, Saab UK secured a £1.8-million ($2.45-million) contract from the UK Government to sustain logistics for the Giraffe 1X radar.
