SENSEI project boosts EU telecom fiber with sensing tech

Exail has joined the European SENSEI project, a research initiative aimed at transforming existing telecommunication fiber networks into large-scale distributed sensing platforms. The project, funded by the Horizon Europe program with a €5 million investment over three years, seeks to improve security, resilience, and environmental monitoring across European infrastructure.

The SENSEI project will utilize advanced photonic techniques to detect external stresses on fiber optic cables, allowing for real-time network monitoring without service disruption. This innovative approach will enable telecommunications operators to enhance infrastructure reliability, detect potential threats, and support environmental data collection.

By integrating sensing capabilities into fiber networks, the project is expected to provide critical insights into structural health monitoring, seismic activity detection, and perimeter security applications. Exail’s expertise in fiber-optic sensing technologies will play a key role in the project’s development and implementation.

The SENSEI initiative represents a significant step forward in leveraging existing telecommunications infrastructure for broader security and environmental applications, reinforcing Europe’s position at the forefront of technological innovation in fiber-optic communications.
