H140 unveiled: Airbus expands light twin-engine helicopter lineup

Airbus Helicopters has introduced the H140, a new light twin-engine helicopter, at the VERTICON exhibition in Dallas, Texas. The 3-tonne-class rotorcraft is designed for emergency medical services (EMS), passenger transport, and private and business aviation. The helicopter is expected to enter service in 2028, initially targeting the EMS sector.

A full-scale model of the H140 in an EMS configuration was presented at the event. The helicopter features a new T-shaped tail boom with an optimized Fenestron for reduced noise levels, a five-blade bearingless main rotor, and upgraded engines. Its expanded cabin space, large windows, and redesigned layout can accommodate up to six passengers. The high tail boom and large sliding and clamshell doors allow for easier patient loading and access to different stretcher systems, including intensive care units and transport incubators.

The H140 is powered by the Safran Arrius 2E engine, producing 700 shp, and is equipped with a dual-channel full-authority digital engine control (FADEC) system. This setup manages both engines, optimizing performance and providing additional power reserves in case of single-engine operation.

The rotor system used on the H140 is the same five-bladed bearingless design introduced on the H145 in 2019. This design aims to simplify maintenance and improve reliability. Operators will follow an optimized maintenance schedule, aligning airframe and engine servicing intervals to reduce operational costs. Airbus Helicopters plans to build four dedicated prototypes, with flight testing already underway at its Donauwörth facility.

The helicopter will also feature the Helionix avionics system, which is used in other Airbus helicopter models such as the H135, H145, H160, and H175. Helionix includes a 4-axis autopilot and an advanced cockpit layout designed to enhance situational awareness and reduce pilot workload.
