Kongsberg Maritime has signed an agreement with Damen Naval to supply propulsion equipment for a new frigate being developed for the Colombian Navy. The contract covers twin controllable pitch propellers (CPP) and shaftline systems.
The vessel is being constructed under Colombia’s Plataforma Estratégica de Superficie (PES) program, which aims to modernize the country's naval fleet by replacing the Padilla-class frigates. Construction is expected to begin at the end of 2025, with delivery scheduled for late 2029 or early 2030.
The new frigate will be based on Damen’s SIGMA design, a modular shipbuilding approach that allows customization based on operational requirements. SIGMA variants are already in service with navies including those of Mexico and Indonesia.
This marks a continuation of Kongsberg Maritime’s cooperation with Damen Naval. In 2024, the company was selected to supply CPP systems and shaftlines for four anti-submarine warfare frigates destined for the Dutch and Belgian navies. The partnership reflects ongoing collaboration between the two companies on naval modernization efforts in Europe and beyond.
