Turkish defense company STM, held a keel laying ceremony marking the start of construction on Türkiye’s first National Fast Attack Craft (FAC), built under contract to the Republic of Türkiye’s Secretariat of Defence Industries (SSB).

The ceremony, held at an Istanbul shipyard, follows a contract signed on 9 September 2024 and a steel-cutting event on 8 July 2025. STM first revealed a model of the vessel at IDEF 2025 on 22 July.

The 68-metre FAC is designed for surface warfare and shallow water operations. STM says the vessel will be capable of operating from predesignated concealment positions, using long-range guided missiles and a 76 mm gun to engage surface targets and to conduct coordinated attacks with frigates and helicopters. The design emphasizes low radar cross section, high speed and manoeuvrability, and survivability through air defence and decoy systems. STM lists a minimum range of 800 nautical miles, a maximum speed above 39 knots and accommodation for 36 personnel.

Technical highlights provided by STM include 76 mm main gun, surface-to-surface missile system (ATMACA SSM), combat management system, 3D surveillance radar, electronic support measures and infrared search and attack capabilities. Propulsion will consist of four diesel engines driving steerable waterjets.

STM general manager Özgür Güleryüz said: “In the construction phase of our National Fast Attack Craft, which has been entirely designed by STM engineers, we have now placed the first block following the initial steel-cutting ceremony. This project represents not only the production of a new naval platform but also Türkiye’s advancement to the level of designing and constructing its own indigenous FAC. With its national design, high degree of indigenization and modern weapon systems, our National FAC will further enhance Türkiye’s deterrence and strength in the Blue Homeland.”
