The Philippine Navy (PN) is looking to strengthen its shipbuilding capabilities through technology transfers with Italy, a country known for its advanced shipbuilding industry. This initiative aligns with the Philippines’ Self-Reliant Defense Posture (SRDP) Revitalization Act, which aims to enhance the country’s defense capabilities through domestic production.
PN spokesperson Capt. John Percie Alcos highlighted the importance of collaborating with nations that possess advanced shipbuilding technologies. “By engaging with like-minded nations, we can build superior ships not only for the Armed Forces but also for the commercial sector,” Alcos said during a briefing on Tuesday.
Alcos also emphasized the need for the PN to engage with countries that have perfected the specific capabilities the Navy seeks to develop. Italy, with one of the most robust shipbuilding industries in the world, remains a key partner in the PN’s goal of modernizing its naval forces.
The SRDP Revitalization Act, also known as Republic Act 12024, aims to ensure that the Philippines can defend itself with minimal reliance on foreign support. It also seeks to promote domestic defense production and the development of a national defense industry.
