The deal, referred to as ‘Unity’, focuses on the design, manufacture, and support services required for the nuclear reactors powering the submarines. Rolls-Royce Submarines Ltd, the company behind the contract, will create more than 1,000 new jobs in the UK, while securing an additional 4,000 positions.
Defence Secretary, John Healey, is expected to announce the agreement during a visit to Rolls-Royce’s nuclear reactor production facility in Derby, underscoring the contract's value to the national defense strategy. The government is also aiming to streamline the procurement process, ensuring improved cost-effectiveness. Over the next eight years, the initiative is projected to deliver savings of over £400 million, delivering better value for the taxpayer.
The contract also aligns with the UK’s nuclear deterrent strategy, known as the "triple-lock" commitment, which involves constructing four new nuclear submarines in Barrow-in-Furness, maintaining the continuous at-sea deterrent, and delivering future upgrades. Rolls-Royce’s commitment to the UK defense sector will provide long-term stability and foster a closer relationship between government and industry.
The Unity agreement not only supports the UK’s defense capability but also strengthens international ties, particularly the AUKUS partnership with the United States and Australia. The new initiative is also anticipated to contribute to the implementation of the upcoming Defence Industrial Strategy, driving economic growth across the UK.
Speaking at the announcement, Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the importance of maintaining the nuclear deterrent while supporting high-skilled UK jobs. He noted that the agreement would enhance defense capabilities and provide resilience to the UK’s supply chain.
Steve Carlier, President of Rolls-Royce Submarines, highlighted the importance of the long-term contract in securing the future of the Royal Navy’s nuclear fleet and the wider defense industry. The contract will also foster investment in skills, equipment, and facilities, ensuring the UK’s defense interests are protected both at home and abroad.
The deal marks a significant step in strengthening the UK’s nuclear deterrent and supporting the Royal Navy’s mission. Sir Chris Gardner, CEO of the Submarine Delivery Agency, emphasized that the partnership with Rolls-Royce would enhance resilience, collaboration, and efficiency across the supply chain.
As the UK continues to prioritize its defense capabilities, the ‘Unity’ contract is a key milestone in ensuring national security and reinforcing Britain’s position on the global stage.
