The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded a £65 million contract to CGI UK to develop Borealis, a command, control, and data processing system aimed at enhancing the monitoring and protection of military satellites.

Borealis will compile and process data from multiple sources to improve space domain awareness for the UK military and the UK Space Agency. The system will support decision-making and operations both domestically and internationally.

The five-year contract will sustain around 100 skilled jobs across Leatherhead, Reading, and Bristol. Borealis will provide software for the National Space Operations Centre, which oversees the UK’s space surveillance and protection capabilities.

The system is designed to enhance space domain awareness, protect UK space assets through data compilation, and integrate a command and control system to deliver decision-quality information across different security classifications.

Major General Paul Tedman, Commander of UK Space Command, stated that understanding space activities is essential for protecting UK and allied space assets in an increasingly contested and congested environment.

CGI UK provides IT services to international defence customers, including in the UK, Australia, Canada, and the USA.
