Raytheon, a business of RTX, has been awarded a $205 million contract by the U.S. Navy for continued production of the Phalanx Close-In Weapon System (CIWS).
Under the agreement, Raytheon will deliver upgrades, conversions, overhauls, and associated equipment to support the system. Work will be carried out in Louisville, Kentucky, and at other U.S. facilities through 2029.
Barbara Borgonovi, president of Naval Power at Raytheon, described the Phalanx as the Navy’s last line of defense, saying the contract reflects its importance for fleet protection.
The Phalanx is a rapid-fire, radar-guided gun system designed to counter anti-ship missiles and other close-in threats. It is deployed across all U.S. Navy surface combatant classes and has been exported to 24 allied navies.
The system has seen operational use, including in January 2024 when the USS Gravely intercepted a Houthi missile in the Red Sea, preventing it from striking the vessel.
