Fincantieri advances €1.18 billion contract with Indonesian Navy

Fincantieri has hosted a name change ceremony for two Multipurpose Combat Ships (MPCS/PPA) acquired by the Indonesian Navy as part of a €1.18 billion contract signed in 2024. The ceremony took place at Fincantieri's Muggiano shipyard, marking an important step in strengthening the defense collaboration between Italy and Indonesia.

The two vessels, originally built as the fifth and sixth units for the Italian Navy under the names “Marcantonio Colonna” and “Ruggiero di Lauria,” have now been renamed KRI BRAWIJAYA-320 and KRI PRABU SILIWANGI-321. This move comes as part of a strategic partnership between Fincantieri and the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, aimed at enhancing Indonesia’s naval capabilities and ensuring regional security in the Indo-Pacific.

The renaming ceremony was attended by key military officials, including Admiral Muhammad Ali, Chief of the Indonesian Navy, and Admiral Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy. Their presence underscored the strong defense ties between the two nations and their shared commitment to maintaining stability in the region.

Built at Fincantieri's integrated Riva Trigoso-Muggiano shipyard, the newly renamed ships will be the largest and most advanced combat units in the Indonesian Navy. Designed with versatility in mind, the MPCS/PPA class vessels are capable of performing a wide range of missions, from front-line naval combat to maritime patrol and humanitarian assistance. The vessels are expected to significantly contribute to securing Indonesia's national interests and enhancing stability in the Indo-Pacific.

The contract follows the success of Fincantieri's MPCS/PPA vessels “Francesco Morosini” and “Raimondo Montecuccoli” during their deployments in Indonesia in 2023 and 2024, which generated considerable interest from the Indonesian Navy.

The two ships are set to be delivered to the Indonesian Navy in 2025, further cementing Fincantieri’s role as a key partner in global naval defense.
