Zelenskyy seeks deeper ties with Europe and UK

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that a new defense-support initiative with NATO partners has secured $1.5 billion in pledges for weapons supplies through the alliance’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) mechanism.

According to Zelenskyy, the Netherlands committed $500 million, Denmark, Norway and Sweden jointly pledged $500 million, and Germany added another $500 million this week. He called the funds “a very real boost” and said PURL enables NATO members to jointly procure US-made weapons for Ukraine.

“Every contribution under PURL is a direct investment in our ability to defend our people’s lives and bring a dignified peace closer,” Zelenskyy said, thanking all allies for their support.

Speaking after talks with European leaders ahead of Friday’s planned US-Russia summit in Alaska, Zelenskyy also emphasized the importance of security guarantees and investment in Ukraine’s defense industry. Discussions included coalition-based cooperation, weapons supply routes such as PURL, and an invitation for the UK to join the program.

Ukrainian leader said his country is preparing to ratify the UK-Ukraine 100-Year Partnership Declaration, signed in January, which provides for expanded defense cooperation, including drone development. He described boosting drone production as a critical priority, noting its strategic role on the front line and the need for urgent financing to increase production capacity.

Zelenskyy added that the talks in Berlin, which included leaders participating via teleconference, also covered ways to sustain Ukraine’s military strength under any future scenario.
