thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace have signed a new cooperation agreement aimed at expanding industrial collaboration on naval defense projects, with a focus on serving the requirements of both Norway and Germany as well as allied nations.
The agreement follows a series of longstanding joint efforts between the two companies, particularly in submarine development. It lays the groundwork for further technological alignment and strategic coordination across a broader range of defense programs.
In 2024, the Norwegian Ministry of Defence named Germany as one of four candidate countries for a potential strategic partnership in the acquisition of new frigates to replace the Royal Norwegian Navy’s aging Fridtjof Nansen-class ships. The new agreement may contribute to that dialogue by formalizing industrial ties between key suppliers in both countries.
Company representatives from thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and Kongsberg emphasized the continuity of their relationship and its potential to support future capabilities. The agreement outlines intentions to cooperate in several areas, including the Vanguard vessel system, strike missile systems, maritime surveillance and targeting technologies, and shipboard systems for current and future naval platforms.
In addition to technology collaboration, the companies also indicated that the partnership model could support domestic and cross-border industrial goals, including job creation, investment opportunities, and long-term support frameworks for naval systems.
The agreement does not specify immediate project launches but signals intent to expand collaboration across multiple military domains.
