Kongsberg Discovery develops north-seeking MEMS for GNSS-independent navigation

Kongsberg Discovery has announced the development of a north-seeking micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) device that enables resilient, accurate navigation without relying on GNSS. The compact, tactical-grade unit is designed to meet size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) requirements while providing robust performance in dynamic and harsh environments.

The solution is suitable for air and surface drones, subsea ROVs and AUVs, defense systems, marine surveying, energy applications, and other sectors requiring precise autonomous navigation. The device operates without a magnetometer and maintains navigation capabilities in environments with a high risk of jamming or spoofing.

Kongsberg Discovery developed the system in partnership with Silicon Sensing Systems, leveraging their combined expertise in IMU design to produce a small, cost-effective, and high-performance north-seeking solution.

The technology will be demonstrated live at Oceanology International, London, from 10–12 March 2026, including operational showcases, workshops, and presentations.
