Kongsberg Wins $1.5 Billion Contract to Supply Counter-Drone Systems to Poland

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace has won a contract worth about 16 billion Norwegian kroner ($1.5 billion) to supply counter-unmanned aerial systems to Poland, the company said Friday.

The contract was signed with the Polish Armaments Agency and includes consortium partner Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa, known as PGZ. The program, called SAN CUAS, covers the delivery of 18 counter-unmanned aerial system batteries designed to protect against threats from drones and other unmanned platforms.

According to Kongsberg, the systems will include a range of effectors such as 35 mm, 30 mm and 12.7 mm guns, as well as missiles, interceptor drones and other capabilities intended to counter aerial threats.

PGZ subcontractor Advanced Protection Systems will provide a tailored command-and-control architecture to integrate sensors and effectors. The companies said the system will be fully integrated with Poland’s national air defense network.

Kongsberg said the contract will lead to increased investment in manufacturing capacity and capabilities in Poland to support higher production volumes of defense systems.

The SAN CUAS system is based on Kongsberg’s PROTECTOR family of weapon systems, including the Medium Caliber Turret MCT30 and remote weapon stations. The MCT30 is in full-rate production and features an unmanned, lightweight and fully digital design suited for counter-drone operations, the company said.

Kongsberg said its remote weapon stations can integrate multiple counter-drone effectors. For the SAN CUAS program, the primary weapon will be 70 mm guided missiles. The company added it will work with APS and PGZ to enable flexible sensor and effector integration across subsystems and vehicles.

Kongsberg has delivered more than 20,000 PROTECTOR systems to over 30 countries, according to the company.
