Teledyne FLIR used BSDA 2026 in Romania to showcase a range of surveillance technologies designed to strengthen border security and counter emerging threats, emphasizing the growing importance of persistent monitoring capabilities across Europe.
Speaking to Defensehere during the exhibition, Jörgen Lundberg, Business Development Director at Teledyne FLIR, said the company is working closely with Romanian partner RomTech to support border surveillance operations already underway in the country.
According to Lundberg, changing security dynamics in Europe have increased the need for advanced monitoring systems capable of addressing both traditional border control missions and newer security challenges.
“Border surveillance and protection of Europe’s border has never been more important than now,” he said, citing regional instability and the need to safeguard territorial integrity alongside efforts to combat illegal migration and smuggling.
Among the systems displayed at BSDA 2026 was the Ranger HDC MultiSensor, a long-range surveillance platform combining advanced thermal imaging, daylight cameras, and target tracking capabilities. The system is designed to provide continuous observation in varying environmental conditions, including darkness, poor visibility, and adverse weather.
Lundberg noted that the system can detect and monitor activity at distances of up to 20 kilometers, making it particularly suitable for large-area border security missions. Romania has already deployed multiple Teledyne FLIR systems along its northern frontier, where they support border guard operations.
The company also showcased its Ranger R20SS-3D radar, a multi-role surveillance radar capable of simultaneously performing ground surveillance and drone detection tasks. The radar can detect and track unmanned aerial systems at ranges of up to 10 kilometers while continuing to monitor ground-based targets, reducing the need for separate sensor networks.
The integration of radar, electro-optical sensors, and command-and-control software was a key theme of Teledyne FLIR’s presentation. Lundberg stressed that combining multiple sensor types significantly improves situational awareness and operational effectiveness for border security agencies and military users.
The showcased surveillance solutions reflect Teledyne FLIR’s international development footprint. While the Ranger HDC MultiSensor is designed and manufactured in Sweden, the associated radar systems and software incorporate technologies developed in Canada, enabling the company to provide a comprehensive surveillance architecture backed by European production and support capabilities.
As European nations continue to strengthen border protection and counter-drone capabilities, Teledyne FLIR sees integrated sensor networks as an increasingly important component of modern security operations.
