BSDA 2026: Thales expands engineering footprint in Romania, showcases GM200 Radar

French defense group Thales showcased a broad portfolio of multi-domain defense technologies at the Black Sea Defense & Aerospace (BSDA) 2026 exhibition in Romania, highlighting radar systems, naval capabilities, and digital defense solutions.

Speaking to Defensehere, Cristian Sfichi, Regional Managing Director for Romania, Ukraine & the Caucasus at Thales, said the company is presenting technologies spanning naval warfare, mine countermeasures, digital connectivity, and next-generation radar systems.

“We have brought some of our latest technologies covering a broad spectrum of solutions,” Sfichi said, pointing to systems ranging from naval and mine warfare solutions to AESA radar technologies and digital command-and-control platforms.

A key focus of the company’s presentation was the Ground Master 200 MM/A (GM200 MM/A), a multi-mission radar designed to provide early threat detection and extended situational awareness across air, surface, and indirect fire domains.

The radar system is capable of simultaneously performing air surveillance, surface monitoring, rocket and artillery warning, and coordination support for short-range air defense systems.

Thales said the system is designed to deliver continuous performance through software updates that enhance electronic warfare resilience and cyber protection against evolving threats.

Sfichi also emphasized Thales’ long-term industrial presence in Romania through its Engineering Competence Centre (ECC) in Bucharest, which employs approximately 800 engineers and serves as a regional software development hub for global programs across defense, aerospace, and digital security domains.

The ECC, established in 2019, plays a central role in developing mission systems, air traffic management solutions, and cloud-based defense technologies for Thales’ international operations.

According to Sfichi, Thales continues to engage with the Romanian Armed Forces on multiple programs, reinforcing its position as a long-term industrial partner in the country’s defense modernization efforts.
