The National Maneuver Air Defense System, known as NOMADS, is Kongsberg’s mobile air defense solution developed to protect ground forces in high-risk battlefield conditions. It brings together radar, command and control, and missile launch capabilities into a single system that can be installed on a variety of vehicles, depending on the user’s operational needs. The system supports both IRIS-T and AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles.
In an interview with Defensehere.com, Hans Christian Hagen, Vice President of Integrated Defence Systems’ Business Development at Kongsberg, shared updates on the system’s current status and integration. He noted that NOMADS is already in service with the Norwegian Army and is also being delivered to the Netherlands, mounted on the ACSV G5 tracked vehicle produced by German firm Flensburger Fahrzeugbau GmbH (FFG).
Hagen explained that NOMADS can function independently with its own sensors and fire control systems, or as part of a connected group of vehicles that share targeting data and coordinate with higher command elements. It can also be integrated into the NASAMS architecture, extending layered air defense coverage to maneuvering battalions and brigades.
Offering flexibility, mobility, and interoperability with NATO systems, NOMADS helps close the gap between point defense and medium-range solutions. It strengthens air defense capabilities for units operating in complex and changing battlefield conditions.
