On January 15, Damen Shipyards officially delivered Germany’s first all-electric catamaran ferry (E-Kat) to its operator, AG Reederei Norden-Frisia. The vessel, designed to carry up to 150 passengers, will operate between Norddeich and Norderney on the East Frisian Wadden Sea.

The 32-meter-long E-Kat is tailored for a 30-minute route, with 28 minutes allocated for boarding and disembarking at each terminal. Constructed at Damen’s shipyards in Poland and the Netherlands, the ferry is powered by two 600 kW electric motors, each driving a propeller. Given the shallow waters in which it will operate, the vessel features twin aluminium hulls with a draught of just 1.2 meters. The lightweight aluminium structure allows it to reach speeds of up to 19 knots. Additionally, the ferry is equipped with large windows, providing passengers with panoramic views of the Wadden Sea, the world’s largest tidal flats system and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

AG Reederei Norden-Frisia has integrated the E-Kat ferry into its broader sustainability strategy aimed at achieving zero emissions. The vessel will operate as a CO2-neutral ferry, with its battery system powered by electricity generated from onshore solar panels.

Joschka Böddeling, Sales Manager at Damen Shipyards, stated, “The E-Kat is a remarkable vessel. We are pleased to see it delivered and look forward to its service in the upcoming summer season. Built to the highest standards, it is expected to provide reliable operation for years to come.”
