Colombian President Gustavo Petro confirmed the government's plan to purchase a fleet of Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets from Sweden. This acquisition aims to modernize Colombia's air defense capabilities, replacing the outdated Israeli-made Kfir fighters currently used by the Colombian Air Force (FAC).
The announcement, made via Petro’s official social media account, comes after the Colombian government signed a letter of intent with Sweden. The deal will include a comprehensive offset package linking the military purchase to social and industrial investments in Colombia. These investments will focus on areas such as renewable energy, water infrastructure, and healthcare projects in key regions of the country.
The Gripen jets will be the latest variant, likely the Gripen E/F, a model already in service with countries like Brazil. This acquisition marks a significant leap in Colombia's defense capabilities, providing advanced technology and performance.
The deal follows a long process of evaluation, with Colombia considering several options over the past decade, including U.S. F-16 and French Rafale fighters. Despite competing offers, Colombia has chosen the Saab Gripen for its lower operating costs, advanced avionics, and flexibility in both air superiority and ground attack missions.
The official signing of the contract is expected during the F-AIR Colombia 2025 airshow, where Sweden will be the guest of honor. This event, scheduled for July in Rionegro, Antioquia, will be the stage for finalizing the deal.
Although President Petro's announcement indicates that the deal is nearing completion, Saab has not yet officially confirmed the agreement. The potential acquisition is seen as part of Colombia’s broader effort to modernize its military forces while fostering strategic ties with Sweden.
