Viper Shield: L3Harris’ digital armor for the F-16 (Interview)

Travis Ruhl, Director of International Business Development at L3Harris, spoke to Defensehere.com about Viper Shield, the company’s next-generation electronic warfare (EW) suite designed specifically for the F-16 fighter jet.

The AN/ALQ-254(V)1 Viper Shield is an all-digital, internally mounted system developed in partnership with Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Air Force. It creates a virtual electronic shield around the aircraft, combining advanced radar warning and jamming capabilities to help pilots detect, evade, and counter modern threats.

Built using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) technology, the system is lighter, more compact, and easier to upgrade than previous generations. Its modular architecture allows for quick replacement of components and integration of new capabilities as threats evolve.

With more than 30 years of EW experience on the F-16, L3Harris is continuing its legacy through Viper Shield. The system has already attracted interest from several allied air forces.
