The United Kingdom announced on Friday the introduction of 100 new sanctions aimed at restricting Russia’s financial resources and military supply networks.
According to the Foreign Office, the measures include penalties on 70 vessels described as part of a “shadow fleet” allegedly used to transport Russian oil in violation of existing restrictions.
The package also targets 30 individuals and entities accused of supplying electronics, chemicals, and explosives for the production of missiles and other weapons.
“The 100 sanctions further build economic pressure on Russia, targeting its military sector and illicit shadow fleet,” the statement said.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper added:
“International action to increase economic pressure on Russia and to cut off critical cash flows, which (Russian President Vladimir Putin) desperately needs to pay for this illegal war, is vital. These sanctions form the next stage in the UK’s leading efforts to ramp up economic pressure alongside our security support and our work alongside the Coalition of the Willing for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”
The move follows Poland’s accusation earlier this week that Russian drones violated its airspace during overnight strikes on Ukraine. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said 19 airspace violations were recorded, describing the incident as an “act of aggression.”
Russia’s Defense Ministry denied any intention to hit targets in Poland, stating that the strikes were aimed at Ukraine’s defense industry in the west of the country. Moscow also expressed readiness to engage in dialogue with Warsaw over the matter.
