The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has confirmed its decision to move forward with the Saab Gripen E/F as its next-generation multi-role fighter, marking a potential expansion of its existing fleet of Swedish-built aircraft.
The announcement, made on June 4, signals Thailand’s intent to deepen its defense ties with Sweden, although no formal contract has yet been signed. Saab, in collaboration with Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), is expected to enter the next phase of negotiations with Thai authorities to finalize the procurement.
While the number of aircraft and delivery timelines remain undisclosed, Saab’s proposal is reported to include not only the Gripen E/F fighter jets but also a broader offset package. According to the company, the package aims to support Thailand’s national defense capabilities and promote domestic industry through long-term investments and technology transfers. Specific terms of the offsets have not been publicly detailed.
Thailand has operated the earlier-generation Gripen C/D since 2011, forming part of the air force's efforts to modernize its tactical aviation assets. The addition of the E/F variant—featuring upgraded avionics, radar systems, and combat range—would represent a significant step in that modernization process.
Micael Johansson, Saab’s President and CEO, acknowledged the RTAF’s decision and emphasized the company's readiness to support Thailand's evolving defense requirements, pending further agreement.
The Royal Thai Air Force has not yet commented on the total scope of the program or how it fits within the country’s broader defense planning priorities.
