The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has placed a new order with Saab for additional equipment related to the production of Gripen E fighter aircraft. The contract, valued at approximately 2.9 billion SEK (around 304 million USD), is intended to support the parallel operation of the existing Gripen C/D fleet and the integration of the newer Gripen E platform.
The procurement will provide new equipment for the 60 Gripen E aircraft ordered by the Swedish Armed Forces, reducing reliance on repurposed systems from the older fleet. The update marks a shift from the original 2013 Gripen E contract, which included plans to reuse certain components from the C/D models.
According to FMV, the move is aimed at ensuring long-term operational continuity for both generations of the aircraft, as the Swedish Air Force transitions to the newer platform while maintaining readiness with the current fleet.
The Gripen E is expected to form the backbone of Sweden’s future air defense capabilities, with full integration underway.
