South Korea has successfully completed a separation test for a domestically developed long-range air-to-surface missile, a key milestone in its efforts to equip the next-generation KF-21 fighter jet with precision strike capabilities.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) carried out the test on Monday using a testbed FA-50 aircraft. The test aimed to ensure that the missile safely detaches from the aircraft without compromising flight safety or system functionality.
DAPA stated that additional testing will continue using the FA-50 platform before full integration trials begin with the KF-21 prototype in 2027. The missile is part of a development program launched in 2018, designed to enhance the air force's ability to conduct long-range precision strikes.
Officials described the successful separation as a “significant step” toward final integration and noted that the missile is expected to be exported alongside the KF-21, potentially strengthening South Korea’s position in the global defense market.
