Military cooperation between Azerbaijan and Russia may see further development, as Russian defense experts suggest the possible acquisition of Su-35 fighter jets and modern air defense systems by Baku.
Speaking on Azerbaijan's state television channel AZ TV, Igor Korotchenko, director of the Moscow-based Caspian Institute for Strategic Studies (CISS), outlined the potential benefits for Azerbaijan's defense capabilities if such a procurement were to occur.Korotchenko stated that the Su-35, a 4++ generation multirole fighter developed by Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), could be offered to Azerbaijan. He claimed that acquiring two squadrons would enhance the country’s ability to secure its airspace and deter external threats. He also noted that long-range air defense systems such as the S-400, along with medium and short-range systems like the Buk-M3 (export version: Viking) and the modular Tor-M2, could contribute to strengthening Azerbaijan's overall air defense network.
Korotchenko emphasized the potential of the Tor-M2, particularly its modular configuration that allows for rapid deployment and the capability to counter a wide range of airborne threats.
The remarks come shortly after UAC announced the delivery of a new batch of Su-35 jets to the Russian Aerospace Forces. According to Vladimir Artyakov, First Deputy Director General of the Rostec State Corporation, the aircraft are equipped with advanced targeting systems and modern weapons suitable for diverse combat environments.
The Su-35 is marketed as a 4++ generation fighter, integrating technologies from Russia’s fifth-generation aircraft programs. UAC claims that these systems provide enhanced maneuverability and combat performance, particularly in conditions that limit the capabilities of conventional fourth-generation jets.
Although no official announcement has been made regarding a finalized deal between Baku and Moscow, past developments indicate ongoing military-technical cooperation. In 2020, a delegation from the Azerbaijani Air Force visited Russian military-industrial enterprises producing Su-35 and MiG-35 aircraft. During these visits, Azerbaijani personnel were briefed on the performance, weapons systems, and operational requirements of these aircraft, while Russian representatives expressed readiness to supply combat aircraft based on Azerbaijan's needs.
