Portugal orders 12 Embraer A-29N Super Tucanos as launch operator

The Portuguese Ministry of National Defense has signed a landmark agreement with Embraer to purchase 12 A-29N Super Tucano aircraft for the Portuguese Air Force. This move positions Portugal as the launch customer for the advanced variant of the globally renowned light attack and trainer aircraft.

The A-29N Super Tucano, tailored specifically to meet NATO standards, boasts advanced avionics and enhanced communication systems, making it a versatile choice for Advanced Pilot Training, Close Air Support (CAS), Light Attack, and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions. The aircraft's capabilities are further bolstered by undisclosed features designed to align with Portugal’s unique operational requirements.

According to Embraer Defense & Security President and CEO Bosco da Costa Junior, the agreement signifies a deepening partnership between Embraer and Portugal. "This contract allows us to contribute to the modernization of the Portuguese Air Force and reinforces our commitment to industrial cooperation with Portugal's defense sector," he said.

The A-29 Super Tucano has proven itself globally, with more than 260 units ordered and over 570,000 flight hours logged, including 60,000 hours in combat. Known for its reliability, versatility, and cost-effectiveness, the aircraft is currently in use by numerous air forces worldwide.

The Super Tucano is recognized for its ability to operate in austere environments, including unpaved runways, while maintaining high levels of structural integrity and reliability. Equipped with cutting-edge avionics and weapon systems, it supports a wide range of missions, such as Advanced Pilot Training, Air Patrol, Border Surveillance, Armed ISR, and Air Escort.

Portugal’s acquisition of the A-29N highlights its commitment to modernizing its defense capabilities while adopting an aircraft that excels in both training and operational missions. With this contract, the Portuguese Air Force takes a significant step forward in enhancing its mission readiness and operational flexibility.
