At the 2025 Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA), Leonardo and its long-time Malaysian partner, Weststar Aviation Services, officially announced the launch of a major rotorcraft acquisition and modernization initiative for the Malaysian Government. The program involves the potential delivery of up to 28 helicopters across multiple types, including a combination of confirmed orders and options, with the majority expected between 2026 and 2027.

Under the plan, Weststar will lease the helicopters to Malaysian government agencies for a period of 15 years, and will provide localized support and training services. The project marks Leonardo’s largest government helicopter deal in Malaysia to date and reflects a broad effort to enhance the operational capabilities of multiple agencies including the Royal Malaysian Police, the national fire and rescue department (Bomba), and the armed forces.

The fleet will support a wide range of missions such as utility, transport, law enforcement, firefighting, emergency medical services, and disaster relief. Among the aircraft types included are AW149 helicopters for the Royal Malaysian Air Force and the Royal Malaysian Army, to be used in utility and Combat Search and Rescue roles. This marks the debut of the AW149 platform in Malaysia and strengthens its presence in the international defense market.

Leonardo stated that the program aligns with its strategic ambition to expand its industrial footprint in Malaysia, and to position the country as a central hub for regional aerospace capability. The company plans to increase investment in local training and maintenance infrastructure, including the addition of new Full-Flight Simulators, electronic systems servicing capabilities, and blade repair facilities.

Leonardo currently supports over 70 operators in Malaysia with a combined fleet of more than 240 helicopters, which collectively fly over 40,000 hours annually. Its regional training academy near Kuala Lumpur remains its only such facility outside of Europe and the U.S., with significant growth in trained personnel and simulator use over the past decade.
