Leonardo expands global helicopter sales with new orders at Verticon 2025

Leonardo announced a significant expansion of its presence in the global commercial helicopter market. The company secured nearly 30 orders for helicopters across various models, totaling an estimated value of 370 million EUR. These orders, which are expected to be delivered between 2026 and 2028, span multiple regions including Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia-Pacific. The helicopters will primarily be used for energy support, rescue, public service duties, and VIP transport.

The orders involve a range of Leonardo’s helicopter models, including the AW109 GrandNew, AW169, AW139, and AW189. In addition to these sales, Leonardo also signed preliminary contracts for 15 units of the AW09, a next-generation single-engine helicopter, for European and Southeast Asian customers. The company also introduced new market opportunities, particularly in energy industry support and rescue missions, with the AW169 and AW189 models. Leonardo also presented new advancements in pilot training through its VxR virtual and extended reality simulator.

A key highlight of the event was the continued strength of Leonardo’s position in the energy market. The company currently operates nearly 500 helicopters in offshore transport, holding a dominant 60% market share over the past five years. The AW139 and AW189 models, both in the intermediate and super-medium twin-weight categories, are well-positioned for long-range operations in offshore environments. These helicopters have proven their ability to outperform older, heavier models. Recent contracts, such as the purchase of two AW139s by Gama Aviation in the UK and three AW139s by China General Aviation Company (CGAC), underline the ongoing success of these aircraft in the energy sector.

The AW189 fleet also saw growth with new orders, including a contract signed by Norwegian operator Lufttransport for two AW189s for long-range missions in demanding conditions. Another notable development was the order for the skidded variant of the AW169 by Petroleum Air Services (PAS) of Egypt, marking its entry into the energy sector. Additionally, Sabine Harbor Pilots placed an order for two AW169s to provide Harbor Pilot Shuttle services in Texas, expanding the aircraft’s presence in North America.

The AW169 also saw success in the rescue sector, with an order from Gama Aviation for three units in the UK. The new variant of the AW169 features increased payload and enhanced capabilities on unprepared terrains, making it more effective in life-saving missions. Parkview Samaritan in the USA also ordered an AW169 for their critical care transport program. Meanwhile, LifeFlight in Australia ordered four more AW139s to support emergency medical services, search and rescue, and law enforcement operations across the country.

In the VIP transport sector, Leonardo further solidified its leadership with several new orders. Sloane of the UK ordered five AW109 GrandNew helicopters, and Aero Asahi signed for two AW169s for the Japanese market. Mitsui Bussan Aerospace, Leonardo's Japanese distributor, also renewed its agreement and committed to purchasing eleven helicopters over the next few years.

Leonardo continues to focus on modernizing its helicopter fleet with advanced technologies and capabilities that meet the highest safety and certification standards. The company has also emphasized sustainability and digitalization across its operations, from on-board systems to maintenance and training, ensuring it remains competitive in the market.
