Latvia has delivered 500 combat drones to Ukraine as part of an international drone coalition supporting Kyiv’s defense efforts. This initiative is a component of a larger plan to manufacture 12,000 drones, valued at 17 million euros ($17.7 million), over the coming months.

Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds announced on February 27, 2025, that the first shipment of 500 combat drones had been sent to Ukraine. The international drone coalition, established in February 2024 and led by Latvia and the United Kingdom, includes 17 nations that have collectively pledged nearly 2 billion euros ($2.1 billion) to enhance Ukraine’s military capabilities. In 2024, Latvia contributed 20 million euros ($21.1 million) to this effort and has committed an equal amount for 2025. Last year, Riga supplied approximately 5,000 drones to Kyiv.

Strengthening Latvia’s Defense Industry

Latvia’s involvement in the coalition has significantly advanced its drone manufacturing sector, reinforcing national defense capabilities while also fostering the growth of the domestic defense industry. Local companies are gaining access to international contracts and expanding their market presence.

Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative, stating, “Latvia is on the way to becoming a drone superpower – by helping Ukraine, we strengthen our industry and defense capabilities.”

In May 2024, the Latvian government allocated 20 million euros ($21.8 million) to develop a “drone army” for its armed forces. This initiative aims to modernize Latvia’s military and strengthen partnerships with domestic drone manufacturers.

The shipment of combat drones is facilitated through the international drone coalition’s procurement fund, which is administered by the United Kingdom. Latvia has contributed 5 million euros to this fund. Under the coalition’s framework, half of the financial resources are allocated to purchasing drones from national companies, while the remainder supports the establishment of a mobile training and testing ground in Selia, in southern Latvia.

Minister Sprūds confirmed the latest delivery via X (formerly Twitter) last week, stating, “Supporting Ukraine – 500 Latvian-manufactured combat drones are already on their way!” He reiterated that two Latvian companies will produce the full 12,000 drones in the coming months.

The coalition’s broader strategy aims to deliver approximately 100,000 combat drones to Ukrainian forces, with a primary focus on FPV drones.
