L3Harris Technologies and its joint venture with Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI-L3Harris) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Zamil Shipyards to advance autonomous maritime technologies in Saudi Arabia.
The agreement aims to integrate autonomous systems into existing and future naval platforms, in line with Saudi Arabia’s localization efforts under the General Authority for Military Industries. Zamil Shipyards will lead design and construction, while SAMI-L3Harris will supply autonomous systems, sensors, and mission capabilities.
The collaboration supports the development of Saudi-made unmanned surface vessels (USVs), including modular variants designed for surveillance and security missions in complex environments. A series of at-sea demonstrations is planned for 2025 to showcase progress and validate the partnership’s outcomes.
Dave Johnson, Vice President International at L3Harris and Vice Chairman of the SAMI-L3Harris JV, said the agreement reflects a commitment to enhancing maritime surveillance and mission execution. Alastair Bisset, General Manager of Zamil Shipyards, stated that USVs could be vital for border protection in the face of asymmetric threats.
The initiative supports Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 by contributing to sovereign defense capabilities and strengthening the local industrial base.
