HENSOLDT and QinetiQ Germany strengthen UAV cooperation

HENSOLDT and QinetiQ Germany have expanded their collaboration in the field of uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) and systems, with ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH serving as the prime contractor. This intensified partnership aims to enhance capabilities, support military UAV operations, and improve training and certified testing programs in Germany.

Building on a long-standing cooperation, the partnership aligns with QinetiQ’s Global Threat Representation strategy, reinforcing its position as a global service provider for military exercises, ranging from operational analysis to capability implementation. The cooperation will focus on three core areas:

Capability enhancement for uncrewed aerial systems. Military UAVs of Category IIa, supporting operations such as flight target presentation and system demonstrators. Training and certified testing for UAV operators.

With strategic locations in Bavaria and Schleswig-Holstein, both companies are well-positioned to support the German Armed Forces and security authorities in UAV operations. HENSOLDT has been recognized as a certified body by the German Armed Forces Aviation Office for Category IIa UAVs and will act as a certified training and testing center for remote pilots operating drones in QinetiQ's Category 2c, which includes UAVs that do not require prior approval.

Thorsten Heil, Head of Flight Operations at HENSOLDT, emphasized the importance of this cooperation:

"As a trusted technology and innovation partner, we are committed to delivering tailored solutions that strengthen defense capabilities and public security. This intensified collaboration with QinetiQ marks a significant step toward advancing UAV training and operational effectiveness in Germany."

Matthias Grögor, Head of Strategic Business Development at QinetiQ Germany, highlighted the impact of the partnership:

"Our cooperation with HENSOLDT underscores our proven track record with the German Armed Forces and security agencies, particularly within the German Air Force. By expanding our expertise in uncrewed systems, we aim to establish Bavaria as a leading hub for drone technology."

This collaboration is set to enhance Germany’s UAV ecosystem, reinforcing military and civil UAV capabilities while supporting the country’s broader defense and security framework.
