General Atomics AeroTec Systems is restarting full-scale production of the Dornier 228, a twin-engine aircraft known for its versatility in surveillance, transport, and special mission roles. With a design legacy spanning decades, the Do228 has been reengineered to meet modern operational demands, integrating updated systems while retaining its hallmark features such as short takeoff and landing (STOL) capability, high payload capacity, and adaptability to unpaved runways.
Speaking to Defensehere.com, Managing Director Florian Rohe confirmed that the first newly built Do228 will roll out by the end of 2025. Assembled in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, the aircraft incorporates European-sourced components to ensure supply chain stability and performance reliability. Rohe said the platform’s flexible interior allows quick configuration changes, enabling it to serve as a commuter, cargo, medevac, or surveillance aircraft.Rohe explained that the relaunch of the aircraft includes several technical upgrades, including an electric air-conditioning system, modern LED lighting, and a new brake system. He noted that the Do228 remains in active service with various operators around the world. The Bangladesh Navy and Royal Thai Navy continue to use the aircraft for maritime surveillance, while a Japanese operator employs it for regional passenger transport—demonstrating the platform’s wide-ranging utility.
He emphasized that demand for rugged, cost-effective, and multi-role platforms is growing particularly in regions requiring adaptable aircraft for mixed civil and defense applications. Rohe expressed confidence in the aircraft’s future, stating that the upgraded Do228 is well positioned to serve evolving mission requirements.
