General Atomics AeroTec Systems has completed the delivery of the third overhauled Dornier 228 aircraft to the Royal Thai Navy (RTN), marking a further step in the ongoing modernization of the service’s coastal surveillance fleet.
The aircraft was handed over in U-Tapao, Thailand, following successful ground and flight testing. Two previously upgraded units were delivered in 2023 as part of the same program.
Fleet Overhaul UnderwayThe modernization effort encompasses all seven Do228 aircraft operated by the Royal Thai Navy. Carried out with support from the U.S. Department of Defense under its Indo-Pacific Maritime Security Initiative, the program aims to extend the operational life of the fleet and adapt it to current mission demands.
Each aircraft undergoes a complete structural inspection, refurbishment, and installation of new systems. Key upgrades include the replacement of analog instruments with a digital glass cockpit, which aligns with configurations being used in the newer Do228 NXT models.
Expanded Surveillance CapabilitiesThe updated aircraft are configured for maritime patrol and border security missions. Enhancements include the integration of a belly-mounted radar system, an electro-optical/infrared camera, automatic identification capabilities for vessel tracking, and a dedicated data link.
Mission consoles and interior layouts have also been reconfigured to support more efficient operator workflows. The redesigned cabin includes ergonomic seating and modular layouts, allowing for quick reconfiguration for other roles such as cargo transport or medical evacuation.
Continued Deliveries ExpectedThe fourth aircraft in the program is already undergoing modernization work at GA-ATS facilities. No specific delivery date has been announced, but the company indicated that the program remains on track.
The collaboration between the Royal Thai Navy, the U.S. Department of Defense, and GA-ATS reflects ongoing efforts to bolster maritime domain awareness and regional security capabilities in Southeast Asia.
