DP World Yarimca, a major container terminal located in the Gulf of İzmit, Türkiye, has implemented FLIR’s thermal and visible security solutions to improve security and ensure continuous port operations. As the port expands, maintaining high standards of security is essential to support its operations. Port Security Challenges

DP World Yarimca has encountered various security issues, such as illegal fishing, diving, and mussel poaching. These activities pose risks to both the safety of port workers and the region's infrastructure. Mussel poachers, for instance, have been known to harvest mussels from the piles supporting the port’s berths, potentially damaging critical systems like the cathodic protection system that prevents corrosion of submerged metal structures.

Moreover, illegal divers and hunters have caused delays in vessel maneuvering, which can disrupt port operations and the supply chain. To address these security concerns, DP World Yarimca adopted new technological solutions.

With the end of life of their previous security system, DP World Yarimca sought a new solution that could provide comprehensive security coverage both onshore and offshore. The port opted for FLIR’s range of security solutions, including visible and thermal camera systems, supplied by Turkish distributor IRMARINETECH.

FLIR’s thermal cameras, including the FC-Series ID analytical camera, Saros dome camera, and M232 pan/tilt marine thermal camera, were chosen to monitor the port’s 800-meter shoreline and detect illegal activities at sea, especially during nighttime or adverse weather conditions. These systems allow for continuous monitoring, enabling the security team to identify intruders, monitor man-overboard situations, and detect oil spills.

The integration of thermal cameras has improved the port’s ability to detect illegal activities, particularly those that are difficult to identify with traditional systems, such as during low-light or challenging weather conditions.

FLIR’s camera systems also assist with perimeter security and monitoring the container area. A combination of thermal and visible cameras, including the Quasar panoramic and PTZ cameras, provides multi-angle security monitoring across the site.

Additionally, FLIR Scion thermal handheld cameras are used by port security patrols to detect divers hidden under the berths in complete darkness, further improving security.

Ongoing Partnership and Future Developments

The partnership between DP World Yarimca and FLIR continues, with the port exploring additional ways to utilize FLIR technology to enhance security. Future plans include the installation of thermal boom cameras on cranes to monitor areas around vessels, as well as integrating thermal fire detection cameras. These systems could detect early signs of fire, providing critical alerts to prevent larger-scale incidents, particularly considering the highly flammable materials handled at the port.

The port remains committed to advancing its technological capabilities to maintain security, with FLIR’s solutions playing an integral role in this effort.
