The U.S. State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale to Poland for GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bombs and related logistics and program support, with an estimated value of $180 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified Congress of the proposed sale.
Poland has requested to purchase 1,400 GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bombs (SDB-I) and four GBU-39 (T-1)/B inert practice bombs with fuzes. The package also includes GBU-39 tactical training rounds, practice bombs, bomb components, containers, support and test equipment, spare parts and accessories, classified and unclassified software and documentation, training, transportation support, site surveys, and U.S. government and contractor engineering, logistics, and technical assistance.
According to DSCA, “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security of the United States by improving the security of a NATO Ally that is a force for political and economic stability in Europe.”
The sale is expected to enhance Poland’s air-to-ground strike capabilities, help protect national territory, and support NATO interoperability. DSCA also noted that Poland will be able to absorb the equipment without difficulty.
The proposed sale will not alter the military balance in the region.
The principal contractor will be The Boeing Corporation, based in St. Louis, Missouri. No offset agreement has been proposed at this stage, though any future agreement will be defined during negotiations between Poland and the contractor.
