John Cockerill has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) to collaborate on research in steel decarbonization technology, the green hydrogen value chain, and defense product development. The agreement aims to combine IIT Bombay’s academic expertise with John Cockerill’s engineering capabilities to develop new solutions in these areas.
The partnership will focus on joint research initiatives to advance technologies in reducing carbon emissions in the steel industry, developing green hydrogen infrastructure, and enhancing defense capabilities. Future plans include establishing Centers of Excellence dedicated to these fields, covering aspects such as production, storage, transportation, and application of green hydrogen.
Vivek Bhide, Regional President, India, and Group Transformation Officer at John Cockerill, stated that the collaboration seeks to create solutions for challenges in the steel, energy, and defense sectors. He emphasized the importance of integrating academic research with engineering expertise to explore new opportunities in sustainability and national security.
Prof. Sachin Patwardhan, Dean (R&D) at IIT Bombay, highlighted the institution’s commitment to industry-academia partnerships that facilitate the transition from research to practical applications. He noted that the collaboration aligns with IIT Bombay’s goal of advancing technological innovation in critical sectors.
John Cockerill’s involvement in this initiative is part of its broader engagement in India’s energy transition, focusing on sustainable solutions and industrial innovation. The partnership will also include initiatives to support talent development through internships, doctoral programs, and faculty training.
