German Army orders 149 additional mobile rescue stations from Rheinmetall

Germany’s Bundeswehr has ordered 149 additional mobile rescue stations from Rheinmetall in a contract worth more than €500 million, expanding a program aimed at providing highly mobile emergency medical support to troops.

The order, booked in July 2026 under a framework contract awarded at the end of 2024, includes both protected and unprotected systems. Production is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

The latest order brings the total number of rescue stations ordered by the Bundeswehr to 165, with a combined gross value of more than €600 million. Rheinmetall Project Solutions GmbH said the latest call-off is the largest order it has received to date.

In December 2024, the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) commissioned Rheinmetall to supply up to 137 rescue stations. The initial order covered 10 ballistically protected and six unprotected systems, with options for additional armored and unarmored units.

The rescue stations form part of the Bundeswehr’s Modular Medical Facilities system and are designed to provide troops with initial emergency medical care in highly mobile deployments. Four soldiers can assemble or dismantle a station within a short period.

Each station consists of two containers that can operate together or independently. Both containers are equipped with generators and air-conditioning systems and can operate independently for several days. If one generator fails, the system can continue operating using the generator in the other container.

The medical facility includes a fully equipped emergency treatment station and four additional treatment stations. Medical equipment is mounted on Airliner rails, allowing the interior configuration to be adapted to user requirements.

The stations can be transported using various carrier vehicles operated by the Bundeswehr and can be deployed on terrain with longitudinal or transverse inclinations. Rheinmetall said it developed a dedicated lifting system because commercially available equipment did not meet the required specifications.

The Bundeswehr is procuring both protected and unprotected versions. The new system is intended to replace a more complex tent-based structure with a modular 3:1 container system manufactured by Rheinmetall Mobile Systeme GmbH, allowing the medical facilities to be transported and deployed in more challenging terrain.

Rheinmetall said the program incorporates lessons from the war in Ukraine, including the need for highly mobile medical support systems.
