Fincantieri accelerates fourth U212 NFS submarine delivery under new OCCAR agreement

Fincantieri has signed the eighth contract amendment with the Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation (OCCAR) under the U212 Near Future Submarine (NFS) program, expanding its work on four next-generation submarines being built for the Italian Navy.

The amendment extends the scope of Fincantieri’s responsibilities under the program and introduces additional technological capabilities, including the integration of countermeasure systems developed by WASS and enhanced logistics support.

Under the revised agreement, delivery of the fourth U212 NFS submarine has been accelerated by two years, moving from 2034 to 2032. The updated schedule will allow the Italian Navy to receive one new submarine annually beginning in 2029.

The U212 NFS program represents the next evolution of Italy’s U212A-class submarines, incorporating a more advanced design, a higher level of domestic technological content and greater integration of onboard systems.

According to Fincantieri, the integration of WASS-developed countermeasure systems will further enhance the submarines’ operational capabilities while leveraging the group’s expertise in underwater technologies.

Fincantieri said the program reflects its role as design authority and prime contractor, supported by an integrated industrial ecosystem covering the entire underwater value chain. Construction of the submarines is underway at the company’s Muggiano shipyard, which the firm described as one of its key centers of excellence for submarine production.
