Through its subsidiary WASS Submarine Systems, Fincantieri has secured a major contract from the Ministry of Defense of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the supply of MU90 Lightweight Torpedoes.
The agreement was formally announced during the 2026 World Defence Show (WDS 2026) in Riyadh by Andrea Adorni, CEO of WASS, and Ibrahim bin Ahmed al-Suwayed, Deputy Minister of Armaments and Procurement, in the presence of Dr. Khalid Bin Hussien AlBayari, Assistant Minister of Executive Affairs at the Saudi Ministry of Defense, and Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO of Fincantieri.
The MU90, a third-generation lightweight torpedo, is already operational with the navies of Italy and more than 10 other countries. Built using advanced technologies, it is designed to meet any-task, any-environment operational requirements and address the most demanding anti-submarine warfare (ASW) needs. The torpedo can be deployed from a variety of platforms, including surface vessels as well as fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, highlighting its leadership in the underwater defense sector. The contract also includes logistic support services for the Royal Saudi Naval Forces.
This agreement represents the largest order in WASS’ 150-year history and sets a new record following a recent contract with the Indian Navy. The program will be managed from WASS’s Livorno facility, with deliveries scheduled between 2029 and 2030. The contract marks a pivotal milestone in Fincantieri’s expanding presence in Saudi Arabia and reinforces the company’s strategic positioning within the Kingdom.
