The Belgian Air Force has marked a significant milestone with the successful maiden flight of its first MQ-9B SkyGuardian unmanned aerial system (UAS). The flight took place on February 20 in California, demonstrating the aircraft’s capabilities as Belgium advances its intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) modernization efforts.
Manufactured by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI), the MQ-9B SkyGuardian is part of Belgium’s broader initiative to enhance its aerial reconnaissance capabilities. The aircraft is scheduled for delivery this summer, with Belgian operators set to begin training once the program’s certification and ground infrastructure are fully established.
Configured exclusively for ISR missions, the MQ-9B will be equipped with advanced sensors, including high-resolution electro-optical and infrared systems, as well as an AN/APY-8 Lynx radar. These capabilities will provide Belgium with real-time situational awareness and precision monitoring, essential for military operations and border security.
Belgium’s procurement of the MQ-9B stems from an August 2020 contract signed through the U.S. Department of Defense. The agreement includes four MQ-9B aircraft, two ground control stations, spare parts, and logistical support. The new UAS fleet is expected to gradually replace the retired IAI RQ-5 Hunter drones, ensuring a seamless transition to a more advanced ISR platform. Additionally, the MQ-9B’s open architecture is designed to integrate with future systems, including Belgium’s F-35A Lightning II fleet.
As a Medium Altitude, Long Endurance (MALE) drone, the MQ-9B offers extended operational reach and endurance, making it a valuable asset for national defense and NATO missions. With its adoption, Belgium joins the United Kingdom and Poland in operating this class of UAS. Poland recently signed an order for three MQ-9B units in December 2024, highlighting a growing trend among European nations to enhance their ISR capabilities with GA-ASI’s platform.
The introduction of the MQ-9B SkyGuardian signals a new chapter for Belgian unmanned aviation. With cutting-edge technology, extended endurance, and network-centric capabilities, the aircraft is set to play a crucial role in both national and international security operations. As the Belgian Air Force prepares for its integration, the focus now shifts to how quickly this advanced system can be incorporated into the country’s defense framework, strengthening its commitments within NATO and regional security initiatives.
