Algeria becomes first customer for Russia's Su-57 fighter jets

Algeria has officially confirmed its purchase of the Russian Su-57 ‘Felon’ stealth fighter jet, making the North African country the first international customer for the fifth-generation aircraft. The announcement was made on February 11, 2025, by Algerian state television, which also reported that Algerian pilots are currently undergoing training in Russia on the new aircraft. The first deliveries of the Su-57E, the export variant of the aircraft, are expected to begin in 2025.

While the number of jets and the overall value of the deal remain undisclosed, it is believed that Algeria has initially acquired a small batch of six aircraft for evaluation purposes. The Su-57E, an export version, could feature modifications in avionics and weapons systems compared to the Russian variant, tailored to meet specific customer requirements.

Rosoboronexport, the Russian arms export agency, had hinted at the deal in November 2024, though the identity of the customer remained a mystery until the recent confirmation by Algeria. This purchase marks a significant step in Algeria's long-standing relationship with Russia, as the country has been a consistent customer of Russian military hardware, operating various combat aircraft like the Su-30MKA, MiG-29M, and Su-24M, as well as advanced air defense systems.

The Su-57’s acquisition will bolster Algeria's military capabilities, allowing it to strengthen its air defense amid regional security challenges. The fighter is known for its advanced stealth technology, supermaneuverability, and cutting-edge avionics, making it a competitor to Western fighters like the U.S. F-35 and China’s J-20.

While the deal’s full details are still under wraps, it is believed that the Su-57 will be significantly more affordable than its Western counterparts, which could be a key factor in Algeria's decision. The deal underscores Algeria's commitment to modernizing its military forces, ensuring its air superiority in the North African region.

With deliveries set to commence soon, the Su-57s are expected to be operational by the end of 2026, marking a new era for Algeria’s Air Force as the country solidifies its defense ties with Russia.
