NATO has ordered two additional Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft, bringing the Multinational MRTT Fleet (MMF) to a total of 12 aircraft. The latest expansion coincides with Sweden and Denmark formally joining the MMF program, reinforcing European defence cooperation and enhancing strategic autonomy.

The new aircraft will be delivered in 2028 and 2029, supporting the growing needs of participating nations. With the accession of Sweden and Denmark, the MMF now includes nine countries: the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Norway, Germany, Belgium, the Czech Republic, and the two newest members. The program is managed by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) and provides participating countries with shared access to a NATO-owned fleet, improving interoperability and cost efficiency.

“The expansion of the Multinational MRTT Fleet with two additional aircraft and the addition of Sweden and Denmark to the programme underscores Europe’s commitment to collective defence and strategic autonomy,” said Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Air Power at Airbus Defence and Space. “Airbus is proud to support this mission by delivering high-performance MRTTs from our facilities in Toulouse and Getafe.”

The Airbus A330 MRTT combines strategic airlift, air-to-air refueling, and medical evacuation capabilities in a single platform. With a fuel capacity of 111 tonnes, it enables long-range operations and sustained NATO missions across Europe and abroad. Its wide-body design can transport up to 300 personnel or 45 tonnes of cargo, and it can be configured for medical evacuations, including intensive care units.

Certified for automatic boom air-to-air refueling (A3R), the A330 MRTT brings enhanced safety and mission efficiency. It has accumulated over 325,000 operational hours and currently represents 90% of the non-U.S. new-generation tanker market, with 84 aircraft ordered by 17 customers worldwide.
