Van Halteren, Naval Group partner on Orka-class submarine systems

Van Halteren Technologies and Naval Group sign contract to equip Orka-class submarines with compact, reliable hydraulic, refrigeration, and anchoring systems

Van Halteren Technologies and Naval Group have signed a contract to supply critical systems for the Royal Netherlands Navy’s new Orka-class submarines, the companies announced at NEDS, the Netherlands’ largest defense industry event on Tuesday.

Under the agreement, Van Halteren Technologies will provide central hydraulic power units, refrigeration and freezing systems for provisions, as well as anchor winches and capstans. The company designs and manufactures all systems in-house, ensuring they meet strict requirements for weight, compactness, shock resistance and reliability.

“Space inside a submarine is extremely limited, so all components must fit precisely and withstand the most demanding conditions,” the company said. Van Halteren has previously contributed to the Walrus-class submarine hydraulic systems and is now supporting the next-generation Orka-class vessels.

The project is part of Team Orka, a network of Dutch companies led by Naval Group to support the construction of the Orka-class submarines. This collaboration aligns with the Industrial Cooperation Agreement signed with the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and aims to strengthen national maritime knowledge and industry.

“The Royal Netherlands Navy is an important customer for us, and we are proud that, in cooperation with Naval Group, we can contribute to this new class of Dutch submarines,” said Izaak Veerman, CEO of Van Halteren Technologies. Mark Donderwinkel, Country Director Netherlands at Naval Group, added that Van Halteren’s in-house capabilities make it a key partner for the program.
