L3Harris Technologies said Monday it has been selected as a subcontractor to provide assured communications support for the U.S. Air Force’s future E-4C aircraft under the Survivable Airborne Operations Center (SAOC) program.

Under a five-year engineering and manufacturing development effort, L3Harris will support integration of the communications suite as part of a team led by Sierra Nevada Corp. (SNC). The work was awarded through Collins Aerospace, an RTX business. The E-4C is intended to replace the E-4B fleet, which provides airborne command-and-control capability for national leadership during extreme contingencies.

L3Harris said it will draw on more than 15 years of experience supporting the E-4B while introducing upgraded, resilient communications technologies designed to enable long-term service and software-driven upgrades. The company’s role includes supporting air, ground and space communications integration for the specialized fleet.
