A newly completed storage facility at MOD Ashchurch, located in UK, capable of accommodating more than 900 Army vehicles, has officially opened as part of the Vehicle Storage and Support Programme (VSSP). The facility is set to play a crucial role in enhancing the British Army's operational readiness and long-term capability by providing modern, sustainable storage and maintenance solutions for its vehicle fleet.
The facility, the largest of its kind on site, covers an area of approximately 25,300 square meters—equivalent to five football pitches—and includes a Controlled Humidity Environment (CHE) storage system designed to reduce maintenance costs and protect vehicles from temperature-induced deterioration. It also features dedicated inspection and maintenance facilities, as well as office spaces, all contributing to the Army's operational needs.
The opening ceremony, held on March 3, 2025, was attended by Brigadier Matt Wilkinson and VSSP Senior Responsible Owner Belinda Lunn, alongside representatives from the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), Skanska, Mace, and the British Army. The facility’s completion is part of a broader VSSP initiative, the largest Army infrastructure project currently underway, which includes the construction of 13 new buildings and the demolition of 58 existing ones by 2027.
Warren Webster, DIO MPP Programme Director – UK Army, emphasized the significance of the project’s collaborative efforts between DIO, Skanska, Mace, and their partners, noting the importance of delivering modern and sustainable infrastructure that meets the Army’s evolving requirements. Additionally, Terry Muckian of Skanska highlighted the challenge of working within an active military environment but praised the team for maintaining operations while meeting key project deadlines.
With VSSP due to conclude in 2027, this new facility marks an important step forward in the UK Army’s ongoing modernization and will provide vital support for military operations well into the future.
