The U.S. Army has awarded Saab Inc. a $46 million contract for the supply of its Giraffe 1X radar systems.
According to the Pentagon, the award was made to Saab Inc. in East Syracuse, New York, following a single bid received through an online solicitation. Work will be carried out in East Syracuse and is expected to conclude by September 29, 2025. The Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, is the contracting authority under contract number W31P4Q-25-C-0037.
The Giraffe 1X is a lightweight 3D air surveillance radar designed for ground-based air defense missions. The system provides target data for engagement, drone detection, and Counter-Artillery, Rocket and Mortar (C-RAM) warning functions within a single platform.
It can serve as the primary sensor in Very Short Range Air Defense (VSHORAD) systems, operate as a gap-filler to complement larger platforms, or function as a dedicated Counter-UAS solution. The radar is capable of detecting and tracking low, slow, and small aerial targets, a growing concern in contemporary conflicts.
Weighing less than 150 kilograms, the system is compact enough to be mounted on mobile platforms or installed in fixed positions. Saab states that the radar scans its full search volume every second, enabling continuous 360-degree surveillance and rapid detection of aerial threats.
The system’s modular design and low power requirements make it adaptable for protecting bases, infrastructure, and maneuvering units against evolving air threats, including drone swarms and low-flying platforms.
