The Danish Ministry of Defence has chosen the SAMP/T NG air defense system to enhance national airspace protection and ensure interoperability with NATO and European partners.

The SAMP/T NG is a mobile ground-based system designed to intercept and neutralize medium-range ballistic missiles, aircraft, and drones. Developed by Eurosam, a joint venture between Thales and MBDA, the system is part of a program overseen by the Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’Armement (OCCAR).

Each Danish battery will incorporate Thales’s Ground Fire surveillance radar, the New Generation Engagement Module for command and control, and the Aster family of missiles, for which Thales supplies the seeker. The Ground Fire radar, produced in series since early 2025, uses active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology and has a detection range of up to 400 kilometers with full 360-degree coverage. It can track multiple targets, including drones and ballistic missiles, and is designed for mobility and rapid deployment.

Thales stated that the open architecture of the system will support integration with other European air defense assets. According to the company, the radar’s one-second refresh rate and compact transportable design aim to provide operational flexibility in complex environments, such as dense air traffic or mountainous terrain.

Hervé Dammann, Executive Vice-President for Land and Air Systems at Thales, commented on the contract:

“Thales is honoured by the choice made by the Danish authorities. With Eurosam and MBDA, we sincerely thank our client for their trust. The Danish armed forces will benefit from a state-of-the-art system to guarantee the protection of their airspace and contribute to the defence of European countries and NATO.”

Thales noted that the Ground Fire radar has been developed to support the performance of the Aster 30 missile and can be integrated with other European defense systems.
