The handover ceremony took place on December 17 at Damen’s shipyard in Constanta, Romania, further solidifying the longstanding partnership between Damen and the Pakistan Navy, which began with the delivery of two Yarmook-Class vessels in 2020.
Key Features and Capabilities
The OPV 2600 class vessels have a displacement of 2,600 tons and measure 98 meters in length. Designed for a range of maritime operations, these vessels are versatile assets for maritime security and military operations beyond warfare. Their advanced systems and durable design allow them to operate effectively in contested environments, ensuring resilience and adaptability.
Strengthening Collaboration
Vice Admiral Muhammad Faisal Abbasi, during the ceremony, praised the success of the OPV project and acknowledged the collaborative efforts of Damen, the Galati Shipyard, and other partners. “This project is an ultimate success not only for Pakistan but also for Damen and all co-makers involved. I am confident this collaboration will open new avenues for shared gains,” he said.
The delivery comes shortly after the Pakistan Navy and Damen signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the IDEAS 2024 exhibition in Karachi. This MoU focuses on Damen’s support for the Pakistan Maritime Science and Technology Park (PMSTP), an initiative to foster innovation in maritime technology.
A Step Towards Sustainable Maritime Industry
Damen’s commitment to the PMSTP includes establishing a local service center to maintain and service Damen vessels in the region. The initiative will also promote partnerships with local businesses for shipbuilding projects, emphasizing technology transfer and local capacity building.
Stephan Stout, Damen’s Regional Sales Director, highlighted the company’s vision for fostering local industry. “The PMSTP aligns with our approach of working closely with governments, industries, and academic institutions. Our shipbuilding projects aim to boost local employment and develop a sustainable maritime industry in Pakistan,” he stated.
The collaboration aims to position Pakistan as a regional hub for maritime innovation while ensuring that the Pakistan Navy remains equipped to meet emerging challenges.
