Pakistan has successfully launched its first hyperspectral satellite, HS-1, from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in China’s Gansu province, marking a new stage in the country’s space program.
According to a statement from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the launch was carried out by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO). The satellite is equipped with advanced hyperspectral imaging technology, designed to capture detailed data across a wide range of narrow spectral bands for environmental and developmental applications.
HS-1 is expected to enhance national capabilities in areas such as precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, urban planning, and disaster management. The ministry said the satellite will also support development projects under the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) by helping identify geo-hazard risks and promoting sustainable infrastructure development.
“The successful launch represents a significant advancement in Pakistan’s space program,” the statement noted, emphasizing SUPARCO’s commitment to applying space technology for national development. It added that the mission highlights the longstanding cooperation between Pakistan and China in the peaceful use of outer space.
Live coverage of the launch was streamed from SUPARCO’s headquarters in Karachi, local media reported.
